I think one of the really nice features of RDi is the iSphere plugin - 
many tools, including an amazing "source file" search, also message file 
search and maintenance tools, many others. And it is free. I have not 
heard whether Thomas Raddatz, its developer, will do something like this 
for the VS Code extension for i. There is also a tool for copying source 
members between connections, IIRC, that is not yet a part of the VS Code 
extension, but that team is doing a lot of work on things.

Maybe part of whether to go with RDi or with VS Code extension is, are 
you already using Eclipse. That just came to mind - of course, one thing 
is to see just what the penetration for Eclipse is, has it been 
surpassed by VS Code? What are schools teaching, mostly VS Code, I bet
