First of all, please double check what you did.

A simple way to check the amount of memory used by XMLmind XML Editor is
to use "Help|About". See attached screenshot.

There is no way to get all your images to load correctly if XMLmind XML
Editor has insufficient memory at its disposal.

However there are ways to save memory and to make image loading much
faster: display images as thumbnails or even more memory efficient as
bounding boxes.

You'll have to use menu items "View|Display Images|as Thumbnails" or
"View|Display Images|as Bounding Boxes" for that. See
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/viewMenu.html

You can even make this behavior the default for all your documents by

1) opening a small (that is, having no memory problems) document of the
same type (e.g. DocBook v5.1)

and

2) selecting "Options|Customize Configuration|Use Current View Settings
as Default".

This time, it's RenderX XEP (used as a XMLmind XML Editor plug-in --not
as an external command-line tool-- when converting XML to PDF) which has
insufficient memory.

The above Thumbnails/Bounding Boxes tip has no effect on RenderX XEP.
You must really really make sure to give XMLmind XML Editor more memory
by using this FAQ:
---
XXE freezes when I try to open large XML files. Is there a workaround
for this problem?
---
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/faq.html#outofmemory

FYI, RenderX XEP needs "-Xss4m -Xmx2048m" just to convert the "Darwin
Information Typing Architecture (DITA) Version 1.3 Part 2: Technical
Content Edition" (an OASIS specification) to PDF. This is a very large,
very complex, DITA document containing very few images.

It's also possible to convert your document using the xxeconvert
command-line tool which is almost certainly more frugal in terms of
memory. See
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/xxeconvert/index.html
