There could be some space for the students themselves (in classes) to
share information about their own school activities, and even extended

Based Assessments in other subject areas - maybe Social Studies,
English, 
It might be good if to see if some of the students are interested in
'managing' their own sections of the website as part of their own
learning and in using the Internet to share information and not just
'download' or 'chat',
