Dear All,

I have written a report about the last GLUG meeting, which is attached
as a PDF file to this message.  The report summary is given below.

The two main subjects under discussion at the meeting were the Linux
Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and Linux migration. I gave a brief
overview of LTSP and the implementations at the National Centre for
Education Resources Development (NCERD), the Government Technical
Institute (GTI) and Bartica Secondary School, and demonstrated some key
features. The main advantages of LTSP for a computer lab are summarised
below.

     1. It is low in cost, both in terms of software and hardware. For
        example, it enables computers up to 12 years old to run up to
        date Linux software.
        
     2. Maintenance is much easier because the operating system and
        software are only installed on the server. Workstation desktops
        can be instantly reset to a standard configuration.
        
     3. It provides an incentive to use Linux in Guyana while the threat
        of software licensing is still being largely ignored.

The three LTSP labs mentioned above each have about ten workstations.
They establish a permanent Linux presence in the Ministry of Education
and have attracted some interest from high levels in the Ministry. If
this initiative is to have any long term impact it is vital that the
three Linux labs keep working and keep being used. Therefore I am asking
for volunteers from the Guyana Linux User Group (GLUG) to act in a
support capacity after I leave Guyana at the end of May. I am very keen
to pass on as much of my knowledge of LTSP as possible before I leave,
and I will do my best to give support by e-mail from the UK.

Two products that can be used to facilitate migration to Linux were
discussed at the meeting. The first is eDirectory from Novell, a
commercial desktop management and security system for Windows and Linux
clients that is available for two commercial Linux distributions. The
second is Win4Lin, a windows emulator that runs Windows 95, 98 or
Millennium in a Linux desktop window. Windows bias in the CXC IT is a
barrier to Linux migration in education.
