In the age of file-sharing, cautious academics, often constrained by the tenure-review process, cooperate with the monopoly publishers. Musicians and filmmakers are less timid and constrained, and their much larger audiences also have incentives to get hold of the material. Cash cow for now: the California move on Elsevier may be the beginning of the end.
