The Montclair State University Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies and the Department of Classics and General Humanities invite students to participate in the *2019 summer archaeological fieldschool at the "Villa of the Antonines" site in Genzano di Roma, Italy, on the edge of the Lago di Nemi with all of its associations.* *Students have an unparalleled opportunity to contribute, through excavation, field notes, and systematic analysis of architecture and excavated objects, to the ongoing construction of our knowledge of a historic, 2nd-3rd century CE imperial Roman villa complex with amphitheater, baths, and mosaic-paved residential quarters--not to mention tantalizing possibilities that this is where Commodus was born and began his exhibitionist career as a slayer of animals.* The program is part of an ongoing research project that involves Italian professional archaeologists as well as students from other US and Canadian institutions. It runs for four weeks, June 30-July 27. Students will register for 6 semester hours under HUMN 361 and 362, or a similar course number. Cost: $3700 program cost including 6 sh of undergraduate credit plus air transportation to Rome (participants make their own arrangements) and incidental expenses, totaling $5500-5800 depending on the individual's arrangements. Our summer 2019 student group is largely together, but we still have a few places open. We are continuing rolling admissions until mid-April. This is an unusual opportunity to learn investigation in a small-group setting with much hand-on experience while working closely with MSU faculty together with other professionals in archaeology, drafting, specialized photography, and restoration.
