This book has an excellent chapter about the Colonels' use of Classics in
their own nationalist ideology; e.g. the were having political prisoners on
Makronisos construct models of the Parthenon:  Yannis Hamilakis, *The

Greece *(Oxford, 2007, pb. 2009), Ch. 6.

PS:  I don't want to start a discussion about this since Calder has had
dementia for many years  but 'm proud to see my good old friend William
Calder defending freedom and criticizing the far right  That wasn't his
reputation personally but he was a man of principle; witness also his
exposure of Werner Jaeger's connection with Nazism.
