The original form of _quam_ seems to have been _quamde_ or _quande_ -- see
the entry for _quam_ in Lewis and Short. There seems a possibility of an
original remark on the lines of 'How confused I am!' that might by a
process of attrition have been reduced to a mutated form of its first word.

Or maybe the above is a load of old cobblers.
