Just like battles between Greek heroes and Amazons, and like Greeks vs
Trojans, Lapiths vs Centaurs too was used as an allegory of the Persian
Wars.  I would look at all these parallels because something significant
about Lapiths and Centaurs may have been said/represented in any of those
contexts.  ZPP
