The political scientists are meeting in DC right now, as will we in
January. Here's a nice short piece on non-expensive treats in DC, just a
starter set but useful, I think. Adams-Morgan is a very good
recommendation.

For folks coming to #APSA2019 especially grad students DC can be super
expensive but there are many cheap and FREE ways to enjoy the city. Here is
a thread with some of my favourite DC things to do. Enjoy the conference
but if this is your first time also take time to enjoy DC.
I highly recommend a monuments tour daytime or nighttime. The Lincoln
memorial is particularly stunning at night. You can easily take the metro
(red line) downtown and walk to the National Mall.

DC has incredible free museums. If you have a morning or afternoon off two
of my favourites are the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait
Gallery.

Closer to the conference the National Zoo is free and not only does it have
animals but it can also be a lovely place to go for a walk or wander.

If you're staying at the Hilton or attending sessions at the Hilton you are
a pleasant 10 minute walk from Adams Morgan. Adams Morgan has lots of good
food, drink, and coffee options (Tryst is one of my favourite cafes) and is
a lovely neighborhood to wander.

If you're staying at the Hilton you are also a pleasant 10 minute walk from
Dupont Circle. Dupont is a great place to wander and is home to my
favourite bookstore in DC @kramerbooks . If you are a night owl it is open
until 3 am on Friday and Saturday.

Happy to share more ideas or recommendations just send me a DM.

Dupont also has a wonderful Farmer's Market on Sunday Mornings @FRESHFARMDC
that I visit regularly so if you will be around on Sunday morning it is
lovely.

The Library of Congress National Book Festival is taking place on Saturday
at the Convention Center it is free to attend and RBG along with many
others will be speaking.

If I think of anything else later I will add it to this thread.

It's not near the conference but if you're in the Dupont Circle area one of
my favourite DC hidden gems is the barbie pond on Avenue Q (Q street and
15th St). It's a pleasant 20 minute wander from Dupont Circle and is close
to 14 St which is a great place to wander with lots of

cafes, bars, and restaurants.

U St is another area worth a visit for its historical significance. It was
the epicenter of African American culture and art for much of the 20th
century. If you haven't been to the iconic @benschilibowl it is definitely
worth a visit.

@benschilibowl While the Phillips Collection is not free I highly recommend
their recent exhibition on the global refugee crisis "The Warmth of Other
Suns: Stories of Global Displacement” @MigCitizenAPSA. [always worth
seeing: Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party – DPT]

The Phillips Collection is an 8 minute walk from the Hilton!

@benschilibowl @PhillipsMuseum @MigCitizenAPSA Thought I would add some
useful transit info for #APSA2019 folks. In addition to the metro which is
great DC also has great and under appreciated buses.

For those going to #APSA2019 two useful routes are the L2 which goes from
Farragut Square downtown up Connecticut Ave past the Hilton and then goes
up to Woodley Park where the Marriott is buseta.wmata.com/m/index?q=L2

A second useful route for #APSA2019 folks is the Woodley Park - Adams
Morgan- McPherson Square Circulator bus it's also currently free more info
