A trotting horse makes a very uncomfortable ride if you don't have stirrups to ease yourself off the saddle when the bump comes. The Romans didn't have stirrups. Did their horses trot? When I was a boy, in the dim mists of time, I had a pony who had been an Argentine polo pony in his youth. He could go straight from a walk into a very slow, easy and comfortable canter -- no stirrups required. RH
