* "obscured behind a name made up by later generations" *

* a "history of western denialism" *

*"why the commonly accepted phrase 'Byzantine empire' is an anachronism" *

*"scholars have deliberately mislabeled their ethnicity for the past two
centuries for political reasons"*

*"Why does my field not do this? . . . there's no definitions of what we
mean by 'empire' in that context . . . ethnicities of the Byzantine Empire
. . . this is never discussed either"*

*"The efforts by the Catholic Church to de-legitimize the Eastern Empire as
the legatee of ancient Rome denied the self-identification of its residents
as Romans"*

*etc.*

*I would be very interested to hear on the list from anyone who has read (
OSU Department of Classics Chair ) Anthony Kaldellis' _Romanland :
Ethnicity and Empire in Byzantium_ ( published just over nine months ago
under Harvard U.Pr.'s Belknap Press imprint -- ISBN 9780674986510 ) and
has strong feelings about his claims, arguments, methodology, and/or
conclusions . *

*I'm particularly interested in any comments/arguments from anyone who (
strongly ? ) disagrees with the case which Kaldellis is making in his new
book . *

*Or, does in fact everyone ( now finally ? ) agree ? *
