Right, but those simple wildcard characters are before the -RE
qualifier is applied. What is not documented is which regex syntax is
supported when you add the -RE qualifier. There are lots and lots of
different versions of regex syntax out there, so it would be really
helpful to know which is supported in this particular instance...

The only example uses a character class "[a-z]" and a greedy
quantifier "+" without any further explanation as to which other regex
features are supported. Anchors? Groups? Shorthands?
