Laszlo, Jerry, and Shawn: Many thanks for your replies. You clarified the purpose of "neverproxy", and helped me decide on my next line of investigation. Gratefully, Gary From: Laszlo Gercsov <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 18, 2019 5:44 PM To: Gary Thompson <[email protected]>; [email protected] Subject: Re: neverproxy directive Hi Gary. It appears that your ezproxy is configured to allow unproxied access to sites whch should not be proxied. If you just exclude URLs from your ezproxy configuration, ezproxy will prevent access to those sites. You can get links which include your ezproxy server, coming from diverse sources eg DOI links, which end up with links on sites for which you have no subscription. In that case, your users would be blocked with a "host needed" message. If you configure ezproxy to "neverproxy" those hosts, the user will get to the content, but not via ezproxy. Best, Laszlo. I hope to clean them up over the December break, before classes started again in January. One puzzling item (of many) is a list of more than 550 urls that are specified with the "neverproxy" directive. The list seems somewhat arbitrary and random, at least to a novice. Does anyone else have a list of sites to not proxy? Can you explain why you would add a URL to this list? Although I didn't check all of them, so far I can't find one is configured to be proxied. It seems that if the URL is not listed as a proxied site, there would be no reason to add it to this list. Maybe this directive was necessary in an older version of EZproxy? Its purpose eludes me. I am also asking among the staff here at the USC Libraries to see if there is institutional memory that can explain it, but I suspect that this community may be able to provide some insight. I'd be grateful for any replies.
