If I understand what you're saying, users follow a proxied link to a
database, but can't copy and paste a stable URL from the navigation bar, is
that correct? In addition to unpredictable port numbers, the browser bar
URL may contain session ID information that expires. I encourage users
(including colleagues) to use the permalink feature offered in many
databases. Some of these databases automatically add our proxy string, some
don't. For the ones that don't, users need to manually add the proxy
prefix. On our A-Z list, we have a sidebar of information on how to do this.

We also have a bookmarklet (adapted from a sister  campus) that users can
install on most browsers, and which creates a bookmark for reloading pages
through our proxy server. Take a look:
