Hi,
Can i make "number of guns " as one word and say as "number" is one.. . hence "is" is used..
 
The words conjugate, nouns, singular sounds too technical for me and somehow i had to read it thrice to see if my understand is same as what is presented by Raghu :)
 
Have to read more of quality English material i think. I like your writing style (s) (Srihari and Raghu).
 
Am looking to make less use of words  like  please and kindly and replace it with some other words  while  drafting business mails to clients etc.
Eg:
Please look into it. 
PFA the document you requested for.
Kindly advise
 
These have become so boring and rhetoric (can i use the word rhetoric in this context.. a negative way?)
 
 
Any thoughts/ideas?

The 'is' is for the noun 'number' and not for the noun 'guns'.

"There is" would be correct here.


The verb "to be" must be conjugated for the noun "number" in this sentence, and this noun here is singular.  Therefore, "There is".
