Re: (GRE Success! ) Watch out! Fake college in Canada

Hello Everyone,

I watched this video. its terrible what happens in some of these colleges.
This is why we exist as a group here. If the college is not well known
enough, we actively discourage students from applying. There is no need for
you to come all the way from India or elsewhere to study in a shady or
poorly run institution, of which, there are plenty.

Please feel free to consult with us about the schools you are doing
research on, and be sure to do a heavy amount of research. For example, a
simple Google Earth search for this University could have been sufficient
to cause alarm!

I would recommend the following:

1. First, look at rankings such as US News and corresponding rankings of
the countries you are interested in. Personally, I would recommend that if
the school doesn't appear in the top 50, especially if the country is
smaller, don't even bother. Even then, there are schools like University of
Southern California, that rank high, heavily advertise themselves and are
just money pits that we do not recommend, unless you are a wealthy student
looking to pay up to do some obscure class work that other, more selfless
schools do not offer.

2. Research, research, research. Turn every stone. Trust me, there is
plenty of time. Your graduate school, in all likelihood will change your
life, maybe not as you expected, but certainly things will change. This
means, you need to make time. Look up the school. Find photos. Find
publications. Seek out alumni, find out what they are doing. Find out if
they have mailing lists, social networking pages etc., for students and
alumni. Seek out someone you know who lives in the area...on and on it
goes.

3. Ask our group here. Ask others. Does the question seem personal? Who
cares? A Chinese Proverb goes, "A man who asks, is but a fool for a few
moments". Yes, you WILL need to know where to get tampons, aspirin or a
toothpaste that meets your allergy requirements. Do NOT hesitate.

I will try to expand this a bit into a blog post and get back later.

Also, please do share other stories, and don't be generic. It is not some
"famous institution in Mumbai", or "some college". Name names. Really, that
is the easiest way to protect other students.
