It may be easy to discuss things directly if he tries to join again. I know with the new format, Yahoo! Groups has been causing folks heart burns. Here are a few thoughts and questions: 1. When does your friend want to pursue his degree? Starting next Fall? If so, time is running short. 2. What are his percentiles for the scores? 1. University of Southern California NOPE. Don't go here unless you mean to pay the full price to study a very expensive program and live in a very unsafe neighborhood. 2. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Used to be highly coveted. Now is wallowing in mediocrity. Not sure about VLSI strengths. Look towards some of the West Coast schools. 3. Purdue University (Main Campus) Definitely apply. 4. University of Maryland, College Park Also a very strong school. Very competitive, as are Purdue, Cornell (not sure of VLSI strengths, please research), GATECH, Ann Arbor, Austin (very strong, very competitive, admits are sparse, but do try). 5. Cornell University (MEng program) 6. Georgia Institute of Technology 7. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor 8. University of Texas at Austin 9. Carnegie Mellon University A highly ranked school, but very small and very expensive with very little funding. Check for VLSI strengths before applying and be prepared to foot the entire bill. Talk to Sai Yamanoor, my brother, a CMU alum, on this group or offline. 10. University of California San Diego Ranked lower than actual status. Check VLSI strengths though. 11. University of Pennsylvania Talk to Varadhan, co-owner of this group. He didn't go there, but should know about the school. 12. University of California Los Angeles Flashy, grad programs are generally not good. So do research to check if VLSI is good. 13.Arizona state University Crowded, cheap, probably lower ranked. Do not recommend generally unless you have specific desires that are met by programs here. 14.North Carolina State University Which campus? .
