Conference in Ukraine on Transfrontier Media

Conference on transfrontier media scheduled for June


Media professionals, journalists and academic researchers from the countries
of the former Soviet Union, Western and Central Europe and are invited to
participate in an upcoming conference on the role of cross-border media in
the region, the European Institute for the Media (EIM) announced.

The conference, organized by EIM in association with the Independent
Association of Broadcasters in Urkaine and the Ukraine branch of the
Konrad-Adenauer Foundation, is scheduled to take place June 17 and 18 in
Kiev, Ukraine. The event is also sponsored by the European Commission
through the Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights.

Following an opening speech by noted Georgian political philosopher and
sociologist, Ghia Nodia, a series of panel discussions will be devoted to
issues related to the role of transfrontier media throughout the region.

The first panel will be devoted to transfrontier television, and its effect
on society, politics, and markets in the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS). The second discussion will focus on transfrontier print media. The
third panel will examine how cross-border media can affect political
conflicts and whether they can contribute to the strengthening of European
and other transnational identities.

The fourth panel will look at the rise of the Internet, and how the new
media have given hope that new communication technologies can help overcome
state borders and political divisions. The conference will end on June 18
with an examination of how the media and the public sphere in the CIS will
develop in the future.
