Dear Colleagues,

The University of World Economy and Diplomacy, Tashkent, Uzbekistan is
offering short-term intensive program of language training, and courses on
the economics, politics, and culture of Central Asia that will be held
during July of the year 2002.

The International Summer School will offer courses in Russian and Uzbek
languages as well as courses on the Economics, Politics, and culture of
Central Asia. The program is directed at teaching these courses for foreign
participants. Non language classes are taught in English or simultaneous
translations provided.
Applications from professional faculty and staff, graduate and upper-class
undergraduate students are accepted for summer school enrolment.

University of World Economy and Diplomacy is the leading educational
institution in International Economics, Politics and Law in Uzbekistan and
in Central Asia. Language studies are integral part of the university
program offerings.

The University has some of Uzbekistan's best-qualified faculty, excellent
instructional resources and the best physical plant among universities in
Central Asia. The University has small classes and modern technical
facilities.
The participants will be provided with excellent special on-campus
full-service lodging accommodations, food facilities that offer Asian
cuisine and superior oriental hospitality.


Tashkent is the largest and most modern city in Central Asia. It has
world-class centres of culture and entertainment. It has some of the best
public transportation systems in the world that includes the world famous
cleanest, safest, fastest and most reliable under-ground public transport
system in the world.
The summer program offers participants interesting cultural activities,
visits to museums and famous landmarks, and travel programs that include
visits to world-famous historical Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.
The program offers opportunities for field study, and consultations with
leading scholars in Central Asian studies.

The Program

The summer educational program includes courses in Uzbek and Russian
languages and courses on the economics, politics, and culture of Central
Asia. The language courses are designed to develop language skills with
special emphasis is placed on conversational skills. Participants will be
given handouts to guide them through relevant dialogues, reading
comprehension and building up vocabulary in the language. Grammar is taught
through simple exercises of items as presented in real situations. Audio
tapes provide students practical exercises for listening comprehension and
proper pronunciation.
Courses on the economics, politics, and culture of Central Asia include a
comprehensive coverage of the topics. The courses will be taught by teams of
distinguished faculty who will cover different areas in each of the
disciplines.

The program is designed for a limited number of participants so individual
attention will be given to each participant. An individualised special
program may be appropriate for some participants in order to obtain the
maximum benefits out of the study program.

The program will be held during a 4-week session of classes from July 1 to
July 27, 2002. There will be 16 hours per week devoted to class meetings.
Classes are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 09:00 am
till 13:00 p.m. with 1 coffee break included. Fridays will be reserved for
visiting sites and museums in Tashkent and the surrounding areas. Weekends
provide opportunity for organised travel to some historical places and
summer resorts. Longer stays can be arranged for those who may want to spend
more time in Uzbekistan.

Language courses will be offered at three levels:
* Beginners
* Intermediate
* Advanced

The program offers flexibility in choosing the desired courses. The program
will include 50 hours of Language classes and 12 hours of lectures on the
economics, politics, and culture of Central Asia.

Tours and Cultural Activities

The program includes a variety of  cultural and leisure activities that
include tours to an Uzbek village, mountains, historical Samarkand, Bukhara
and Khiva and visits to theatres, museums, Uzbek famous bazaars and other
Uzbek landmarks.

Admission

Applications from professional faculty and staff, graduate and upper-class
undergraduate students are accepted for summer school enrolment. No beginner
knowledge of targeted language is required. A placement test will be
administered for placement at the proper language level.
All courses are non-credit but the University of World economy and Diplomacy
will issue a certificate of enrolment and successful completion of the
appropriate summer program.
The University will assist in obtaining visa into the country and in other
matters of registration.

The closing date for applications is 10 June 2002.


Lodging
* Accommodation is at the University lodging facilities and can begin as
early as June 30, 2002.
* Lodging ends day after last day of class. Total number of days 31 days.
* Children: There is no children's program or lodging facility for children
at the university.

Certificate
* A certificate of attendance and successful completion of the program will
be issued by the University to participants upon completion of the program.

Program Cost Includes tuition, course materials, lodging, and breakfast
daily, and admission to museums in Tashkent.

Program period: July 1-27, 2002
Program Fee: $2,000

Entertainment, travel and tour programs are extra and are estimated at less
than $500.0

A deposit of $1000.0 is necessary at the time of application. The deposit is
non-refundable for cancellations after June 10, 2002.
