Subject: Conference: Globalization, Security and the Nation State, 15-16.6.2002, Ankara Globalization, Security and the Nation State Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16, 2002 Sheraton, Noktali Sok, Kavaklidere, Ankara, Turkey The conference, which is organized by the Center for Eurasian Strategic Studies (CESS), seeks to draw links between the concepts of globalization, security, and the nation state. The literature has seen considerable debate centering on the relationship between globalization and the nation state, revealing a largely traditionalist approach based on a belief in the resilience of the nation state, as well as a transformationalist approach, which postulates that the concept and role of statehood is in transformation. The events of September 11 remind us of the necessity to reincorporate issues of national security/security dilemmas into this discussion. If the September 11 attacks reveal the changing nature of security concerns on the bases of level, actor and impact, how does this affect the traditionalist and transformationalist viewpoints? The intention of the workshop is to focus largely on states of the Developing World both because the new threat to global security is perceived to be primarily stemming from there and also because these states remain largely on the receiving end of both pressures of traditional security threats and the integrative/ fragmentive dynamics of the new epoch.
