This week the highlight on the Gender and Development page focuses on gender issues in the countries of Central Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The countries of this region have undergone an unprecedented transition to a market economy and democracy since the collapse of Communism in the late 80s and early 90s. This transition has had both positive and negative impact on women living in these countries. Among the few resources brought to your attentions this week, is a recent study published by the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights titled "Women 2000: An Investigation into the Status of Women's Rights in Central and South-Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States." It examines a broad array of issues on the status of women in 29 countries of this region, including: discrimination against women; educational opportunities; participation in public life, politics, media and the private sector; and trafficking. Please, visit the highlight and check the provided links. The team of the Gender and Development page would love to hear your feedback on whether you find these resources useful and what else you would like to see highlighted on the page.
