Knight International Press Fellowship Program Offers
Funding for Overseas Media Projects
Deadline: August 15, 2002
The Knight International Press Fellowship Program is a
private-sector effort designed to share professional
expertise and offer assistance to the media overseas.
Through the program, U.S. journalists are dispatched to
indigenous media organizations to lead training sessions.
The purpose of the program is one of mutual benefit: to
help international colleagues nurture the development of a
strong and free press, and to enhance understanding among
U.S. news professionals of the press and cultures of
countries throughout the world. The program is
administered by the International Center for Journalists,
and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
( http://www.knight.org/ ).
Fellows share a range of specialized skills with their
overseas colleagues through workshops, seminars, and one-
on-one training. While overseas, each fellow receives
transportation, professional and living expenses, and a
modest honorarium. Successful applicants will have demon-
strated outstanding personal and professional achievements
in journalism or in one or more media disciplines, such
as reporting/editing; radio and television production;
layout and design; advertising; newsroom and business
management; or curriculum development.
Partner organizations serve as bridges between fellows and
local journalists and help to arrange seminars, workshops,
and classes. Partners are usually professional media
associations, journalism training centers, or media
outlets. While the Knight International Press Fellowship
Program provides support for the partnership and covers
all costs associated with the program, partners supply
valuable local contacts and an ongoing presence on the
ground.
Applications are required for both U.S journalists seeking
to be awarded fellowships and international media
organizations interested in partnering with a Knight
Fellow.
For further information and application forms, see the
Knight International Press Fellowship Program Web site.
