CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2003 THE MARTIN ENNALS AWARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
DEFENDERS (MEA)

Dear colleagues and friends,

The Martin Ennals Foundation invites nominations for its 2003 Award. The
deadline is 15 October 2002. The MEA application form and more information
on the Award can be obtained 1) from the new MEA website:

filling out the form below and sending it to the MEA Secretariat: c/o

The Award is granted annually to an individual, or exceptionally an
organisation, in recognition of their commitment and ongoing endeavour in
the defence and promotion of human rights. Nominees must currently be
involved in work for the promotion and protection of human rights. Special
account is taken of those who have demonstrated an active record of
combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means. The
MEA aims to encourage individuals or organisations, particularly those who
are working in conditions hostile to fundamental human rights and who are
in need of protection.

The value of the annual Award is 20'000 Swiss Francs, to be used for
further work in the field of human rights. The 2003 award ceremony -
following last year's success - will be held in the framework of the
North-South Media Festival in Geneva (usually early April, at the time of
the UN Commission on Human Rights.). The following organisations
participate in the Jury: Amnesty International, Defence for Children, Human
Rights Desk of German Diakonia, Human Rights Watch, HURIDOCS, International
Alert, International Commission of Jurists, International Federation for
Human Rights, International Service for Human Rights, and the World
Organisation Against Torture.

Past recipients are: 2002: Jacqueline Moudeina (Chad),  2001: Peace
Brigades International, 2000: Immaculie Birhaheka (Democratic Republic of
(Congo), 1999: Ms. Natasha Kandic (Yugoslavia), 1998: Dr. Eyad Rajab El
Sarraj (Palestine), 1997: Msg. Samuel Ruiz Garcia (Mexico),  1996: Clement
Nwankwo (Nigeria), 1995: Asma Jahangir (Pakistan),  1994: Harry Wu (China).

Martin Ennals (1927-1991) was instrumental to the modern human rights
movement. A fiercely devoted activist, he creatively pursued ideas ahead of
his time as the first Secretary-General of Amnesty International and was
the driving force behind many other organisations. His deep desire was to
see more cooperation and solidarity among NGOs.  For more information visit

Procedure & Guidelines

-Anybody can nominate any individual or organisation by filling out the
appropriate form.
-Please note that neither individuals nor organisations may nominate
themselves.
- Persons or organisations mentioned as references should have given their
consent.
-Nominations for the Award should reach the Martin Ennals Foundation by 15
October.
-Receipt of nominations will not be acknowledged.
-The selection of the winning candidate is made by the Jury of the Martin
Ennals Award.
-A final decision is normally reached in January following the nominations
deadline.
-Any documentation attached to the nomination form should be copies as none
will be returned.
Should the candidate reach the final stage of the selection process, the
MEA reserves the right to request further information and documentation
concerning the candidate.

Chers collhgues et chers amis,

La Fondation Martin Ennals pour les Difenseurs des Droits de l'Homme (MEA)
vous invite ` prisenter un(e) candidat(e) pour le Prix Martin Ennals (MEA)
2003 avant le 15 octobre 2002.

Cette personne  ou dans des cas exceptionnels, une ONG -  doit s'jtre
illustrie pour son combat contre les violations des droits de l'Homme par
des moyens courageux et novateurs. Les candidats doivent jtre actuellement
engagis dans la promotion et la protection des droits de l'Homme.
L'objectif du Prix est d'encourager ceux qui travaillent dans des
conditions hostiles ` leurs activitis de difense des droits de l'Homme, et
qui donc auraient besoin de protection.

Le dossier de candidature et des informations sur le Prix (ainsi que les

La valeur du prix annuel est de 20.000 francs suisses, somme destinie `
soutenir les activitis du lauriat en faveur de la difense et de la
promotion des droits de l'Homme. La remise du  Prix 2003, suite au succhs
de la cirimonie de l'an 2002, aura lieu dans le cadre du Festival  Midias
Nord-Sud ` Genhve, qui se tiendra probablement dibut 2003, lors de la
Commission des Droits de l'Homme des Nations Unies.

Le Jury du Prix Martin Ennals regroupe dix ONG internationales: Amnesty
International, la Commission internationale de juristes (CIJ), Difense des
enfants International (DEI), Bureau droits de l'Homme de Diaconia en
Allemagne, la Fidiration internationale des ligues des droits de l'Homme
(FIDH), Human Rights Watch (HRW), HURIDOCS, International Alert, Service
internationale pour les droit de l'Homme, et l'Organisation mondiale contre

la torture (OMCT).

Martin Ennals, (1927-1991) fut l'initiateur du mouvement moderne des droits

de l'Homme, un militant acharni qui non seulement poursuivit avec
criativiti des idies avancies, en tant que premier Secritaire-Giniral
d'Amnesty International, mais servit igalement de moteur ` une dizaine
d'autres organisations.  Son plus grand disir itait de voir se divelopper
plus de solidariti et de coopiration parmi les ONG.
