Course on advanced Print Journalism

Thomson Foundation announces its 2003 international print course


The Thomson Foundation has announced that it will hold a three-month course
on international advanced print journalism in Cardiff, Wales during the
summer of 2003.

Set for June 23 to September 12, 2003, the course is open to 12 senior print
journalists from throughout the world. The journalists must be at least 24
years-old and have at least three years of continuous employment with a
newspaper, news agency or magazine. They should be, in their sponsor's
opinion, potential executive material and suitable for promotion.

Applications are due on April 30, 2003. Participants must speak and read
English with ease.

The course outline includes reporting, news editing, the Internet as a
research tool and publishing outlet, sub-editing, full-page design
on-screen, and specialist reporting. Also scheduled for instruction are
basic camera work, picture appreciation, cropping and scaling, the role of
the press, ethics, privacy and intrusion, and pressures on media freedom.

The cost is 7,000 pounds sterling, which covers tuition, accommodations and
authorized travel in Britain. It does not cover airfare from participants'
home countries. Some financial aid may be available. Applicants are
encouraged to contact, as soon as possible, the British Council, the British
Embassy or High Commission in their country.

The Thomson Foundation's course on international advanced print journalism
is Britain's oldest specialist course for overseas journalists. It has been
attended in the past by more than 1,000 men and women worldwide. The
foundation provides practical training for journalists from emerging
countries of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the South Pacific, the
Caribbean, South America, Central and Eastern Europe and the NIS.
