The book offers a history of the relationships between the Russian Empire, USSR and Russian Federation with national movements and independent states of the Southern Slavs. Many of the stories and details of these relationships are still almost unknown to the domestic audience. Against the background of the 1948-1955 "Stalin-Tito conflict", Hungarian crisis of 1956 casts a new light on the internal reasons that led to the collapse of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Union of Yugoslav Communists and to the dissolution of both polities. The study is based on a broad array of Russian and foreign sources, both recently discovered and undeservedly forgotten. The account and analysis of the events cover the period from mid-nineteenth through early twenty-first centuries.
