Scope of the Conference

The International Bakhtin Conference has met every two  years=20
since 1983. Its main objective is to provide a forum for the=20=20
presentation and discussion of advanced research works=20=20
dealing with the ideas of the Bakhtin Circle.

The XI Conference
=20
Place and dates

 The XI INTERNATIONAL BAKHTIN  CONFERENCE will=20
be held in Curitiba (Brazil), at the Federal  University of Paran=E1,=20
from July 21 to 25, 2003.
=20
Curitiba is one of the largest cities in Brazil with a  population of=20
around two million people. It is the capital of the  State of Paran=E1=20
(in the south of the country). It can be easily  reached by plane=20
from S=E3o Paulo (a 50-minute flight) and from  Rio de Janeiro (a=20
90-minute flight). It is important to bear in mind  that the=20
Conference will be held in the middle of winter. The  season is=20
usually mild in this part of Brazil (average temperatures  around=20
10=BA Centigrade during the day), but since Curitiba is at an=20=20
altitude of 3,000 feet temperatures may fall to about 4=BA=20=20
Centigrade during the night and in early morning. Frosts are not=20=20
unusual at this time of the year.

Themes
 Papers on all areas of the Bakhtin Circle=B4s interests are=20=20
welcome, but papers on the following topics are particularly=20=20
encouraged:
-Latin American Cultures: borders and thresholds
-Readings of "Toward a Philosophy of the Act"
-Philosophical, cultural and historical background of the ideas  of=20
the Bakhtin Circle
-Dialogism in the Human and Social Sciences
-Literary and Language Studies.

Languages
The XI Conference will accept papers in any of the  following=20
languages: Portuguese, Spanish, English and Russian.
=20
Format
The XI Conference will include 4 Plenary Sessions (one  in each=20
of the languages of the Conference) and Sessions for the  oral=20
presentation of individual papers. These presentations will be  30=20
minutes in length plus 10 minutes for discussion.
=20

Proposals for round-tables with 3 participants will also be=20=20
considered. The round-tables will be 2 hours in length (30=20=20
minutes for each paper plus 10 minutes for discussion).

Deadline for abstracts
People interested in presenting a paper at the XI  Conference=20
should submit an abstract of around 500 words  before=20
December 15, 2002.
=20

Proposals for round-tables should include a short  description of=20
its aims and an abstract of the paper to be read by  each of the=20
participants, in the same format as described above.
=20

The language of the abstract will be expected to be the  language=20
of presentation.
=20
 Electronic submissions of abstracts are strongly  encouraged.=20

Selection

The papers for the programme will be selected by the  Academic=20
Committee of the XI Conference. If the paper is  accepted, a=20
notification will be posted to the author by February  15, 2003.

The selected abstracts will appear at the XI Conference  website=20
as soon as their authors complete their registration.
