Deliverable 7.2.2

Further to my email of last week, I am writing to let you know that we have delivered 7.2.2: Final package of tasks, activities and web reports. There are still some gaps/inconsistencies that we will clear up in Genoa, but everything is basically there. Copied below, for your information, is my covering letter to the EC.

WebLabs deliverable 7.2.2 is the final set of tasks, activities and web reports, which has been packaged on the WebReports site. Within each topic area, there are sections for teachers running the activities, and students sharing thoughts and models. The main teaching materials are gathered under 'teacher guidance' where there is a map of the activity sequence, links to all online/paper worksheets, general background information on the subject, and links to reports offering pedagogical advice, and 'learning snapshots' (observations of specific student activities in our development workshops). All these materials have been developed in close collaboration with teachers, and the resource is still growing, as many of the activities are still being trialled with student groups.

All student reports and models (which are embedded within reports) can be viewed, manipulated and critiqued by other students, teachers and researchers, both in their own class, and across countries. Reports can be generated by individuals or groups, and allow for extended discussion of thoughts and models, within one report, or a sequence of reports, showing clearly the sharing and evolution of ideas.  

As we pointed out in a previous report, the extent of automatic translation has been limited. Within ToonTalk, this has not been an insurmountable issue due to the primarily graphic nature of the programme, and students sharing no common spoken language have been able to communicate through their ToonTalk models, and teachers and researchers have been willing to act as intermediaries, so that English could become the common spoken language (there seems to be no other possible candidate). Group reports, bringing together students' thoughts before and after each activity, have been translated by researchers, and these have been shared with groups in other countries, provoking questions and discussion.
