Interesting question. In some sense the presence of the buttons is a reminder that one is replaying time travel rather than being in control. Ironically when I implement auto hide of the buttons this might be even more obvious. If there is no mouse movement (or keyboard events) then the buttons float away. But as soon as you grab the mouse to do something, they animate back and that is a good visual clue.
Maybe rather than the built-in mouse pointer, time travel should use a miniature version of the usual hand. Stylistically nicer and harder to miss.

It occurred to me that when time-traveling maybe there should be an
extra indication that you are not "in control" in the normal ToonTalk
way e.g. colours change like when the power is off?
The mouse pointer is quite small and could be easy to miss.
