I had exactly this problem when I tried using the preview pull-down menu
on documents in which I had not put

\usepackage[options]{preview}

Strangely enough, C-c C-p C-d gave me a preview some of the time in
these documents without crashing Emacs. When I pasted in the usepackage
declaration from circ.tex, preview worked better and I could use the
pull-down menu without crashing Emacs. (Preview 0.9, AUCTeX 11.55,
GNU Emacs 21.3.50.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) (nqmacs)).
