Ok, I was on the wrong track.  Anyway, those questions are supposed to
figure out more details about the problem where the previews appear in
the wrong buffer (__region__.tex).

Do you have the LaTeX toolbar enabled?

What does C-h f TeX-region-create RET show for you?
