preview-latex 0.8.1 needs the image in the input path, preview-latex
0.9 searches in a designated directory `preview-icondir' for it.
Actually, I should probably rename this to preview-image-dir to match
better the usual conventions.  0.9.1 stuff, I guess.

Then it probably is no accident that the image was not to be found.
Half-deinstalled...
