preview-latex 0.9.1 and AUCTeX 11.whatever

Ok folks,

here is the warning: I am getting that kind of nervous itch right now,
the trigger-finger syndrome.

I want to release preview-latex 0.9.1 some time next week: there have
been quite a few fixes to installation procedures and functionality,
not to mention that it is pretty essential that we deliver a version
where the advice is working.  I also like the fact that the run buffer
now looks reasonable on most systems again.  For this to really work
in most situations, we need to get an AUCTeX out soon as well.

I also want to shift mailing lists to the final destinations on
gnu.org.  What sort of stuff remains to be done?

a) installation procedure needs to get tuned.  I think that it might
probably be reasonable if the search for valid Elisp installation
locations is done by considering the following in this order:
specified prefix (_if_ specified)
emacs-binary derived prefix
system default prefix (only if prefix was not specified explicitly)

In a similar vein, the search for a valid texmf tree would consider
specified prefix
tex-binary derived prefix
system default prefix (only if prefix was not specified explicitly).

Search for XEmacs package dir also under libdir?

First match path variable to default locations, and only then go
through all?

b) all documentation should refer to the new mailing lists (that
should work at the time of the release), CVS archives, web pages,
whatever.

c) it should be verified that the multibyte stuff works more or less
by now.

d) Given that we provide RPM files for AUCTeX/SuSE, it would appear
reasonable to attempt the same for preview-latex/SuSE.  There should
not be too much to cater for in addition to what is there already.

For the next AUCTeX release then, the installation procedure should
get consolidated with preview-latex.  Indeed, it might be an idea to
try to transfer the current preview-latex pseudo-XEmacs-package
installation procedure to AUCTeX.

And I also do not want to wait too long for that.  The next AUCTeX
will probably be called 11.60 if we don't bundle preview-latex, and
11.90 if we do bundle it.
