As David says, dvipng has never been bundled with preview-latex (the CVS
archive was the only common point and I haven't split that just by
laziness, until now)

dvipng has made its way into TeXlive, teTeX-3 and MiKTeX, can be
downloaded off CTAN and sourceforge and savannah, so it is
available from a lot of sources.

I think this should be done for all binaries used in AUCTeX at some point.
But I expect that transition to be slow.

Yep (see dvipng's ChangeLog), I was talking about Copyright assignment.

Exactly. It has no resemblance of that driver anymore, though.
