The bug depends on

a) using the "counters" option in preview-required-option-list
b) the advice working...
c) a marker being wrongly interpreted as an integer (the bit pattern).

Whether point c) leads to an error or not depends on the memory layout
of your current Emacs session.

The bug has persisted for at least 4 years or so without getting
noticed, so it is very good that you sent in a backtrace.
