_If_ you really want to close gmane.emacs.latex.preview.{devel,bugs},
I would suggest to import those messages into the new Gmane groups.
Gmane allows importing and exporting of archives so transferring from
one groups to another should be possible.

One bad side effect of removing the g.e.l.preview.* (and g.e.auc-tex?)
would be that URLs to discussions will break.  Bad.

I would propose:

- Keep the current (=old) Gmane groups.

- Create the new mailing lists and request corresponding Gmane groups:
  gmane.emacs.auctex.{general,devel,announce,bugs}
  (g.e.a.commits (auctex-diffs) and g.e.a.cvs (auctex-commit) later as
  you suggested below).

  After requesting the Gmane groups, the Gmane admins will sent out
  subscriptions reques to the lists and inform the list admin (see
  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.discuss/2781
  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.vm.kaffe.general/40)

  The groups will be created as soon as new messages arrive (or
  after archives are imported--I'm not 100% sure about this).

- Import the archives into the new groups:

  gelp.bugs   -> gmane.emacs.auctex.bugs
  gelp.devel  -> gmane.emacs.auctex.devel
  ge.auc-tex  -> gmane.emacs.auctex.general

  This step is not strictly necessary, but I would suggest to do it.
  E.g. it would simplify searching for old discussions/problems if you
  don't have to search the obsoleted groups.

- Post a reminder on the lists including links to the new Gmane
  group(s).

- Set the status of the Gmane groups to read-only (i.e. when someone
  tries to post thru Gmane, he will get a reply telling so).
  Additionally the list admins of auc-tex@sunsite and
  preview-latex-devel@sf could remove the subscription of the
  corresponding Gmane accounts: that no more messages will be added to
  the old groups.

Yes, I can do this.  The lists are not yet visible on Savannah[1].  As
already suggested previously[2], I will request the following groups on
Gmane:

auctex   	gmane.emacs.auctex.general      General discussion about AUCTeX
bug-auctex	gmane.emacs.auctex.bugs         Bug reports on AUCTeX
info-auctex	gmane.emacs.auctex.announce     Announcements about AUCTeX (read-only)
auctex-devel	gmane.emacs.auctex.devel        AUCTeX development
[ and later (see below) ]
auctex-commit   gmane.emacs.auctex.commits      Commits to the AUCTeX repository (read-only)
auctex-diffs    gmane.emacs.auctex.cvs          AUCTeX commit messages (read-only)
