The function bbdb-mua-window-p is doing the job of setting the arg horiz-p at various places in bbdb-mua.el (which, in the end, always becomes the arg horiz-p of bbdb-display-records). So a solution would be to make the function bbdb-mua-window-p customizable, say, by providing a user variable bbdb-mua-window-p that can hold a custom function instead of using the function bbdb-mua-window-p.
