verifying email addresses

Has anyone written, or integrated, any tool that would go through a bbdb
database and then attempt an SMTP operation to verify that address is still
valid?

Alternatively, are there settings/options that integrated with mh-e, that
would notice when I receive email from someone in my database and mark that
email as being live?  I wrote something like that for bbdb 2, but it rotted.
