Indeed, uninstalling 'emacs' and installing 'emacs-pgtk' instead fixes
the problem.

'emacs' is a "metapackage" [1][2]. The question is thus: Why does, in a
Kubuntu environment, 'sudo apt install emacs' install the emacs-gtk package,
when the emacs-pgtk package would be better suited?
