Thanks for noticing. I had a vague recollection I'd looked into 
lexical-binding in Eshell before, but I'd forgotten all about this bug.

I agree that this bug can be closed now. Sorry for the absentmindedness 
here. (It's been quite a year for me, though things are a bit calmer now.)
