I just wanted to report that this functionality is on its way into C#
mode right now, as can be seen here:
https://github.com/emacs-csharp/csharp-mode/pull/251

Thanks again for working on this!  There is already one user reporting
that huge slowdowns aren't occurring anymore given that pr.  There are
probably still stuff to iron out, but I think it is a nice starting
point.  Sorry it dragged out looking into this, but having a baby
apparently takes some time and effort :-).

Hope all is well in these crazy times.
