Three questions from an ECB beginner

Hi, I'm new to ECB (and Emacs in general). I've installed ECB and love it, but have three problems I haven't been able to fix: 1. When ECB starts, I get a buffer asking me to save all changed options into ~/.emacs. I'm running Emacs from a USB keychain and have all my options saved into default.el, which I think is causing this to happen each time ECB starts. 2. Then, it displays a buffer titled "First steps after activating ECB first time." I'd like to turn this off, but can't find a setting for it. 3. When ECB starts the directory tree is empty. Once I open a file, the directory tree is populated. Ideally I'd like to start with the directory tree open to the directory from which Emacs is being run. Could anyone please give me a few pointers towards solving these problems? Even a link to the relevant documentation would help; I've managed to find ECB configuration options for everything else I want to do, just not these three things.
