I tested it with the following minimal init.el file:

(require 'package)
(package-initialize)
(load-theme 'solarized-dark t)

and it still happens. I also tested with some light themes, including
solarized-light, twilight-bright and vs-light. It also happens with
the light themes, but the effect is less pronounced.
