R Transcript opens in readonly buffer

Hi, I am having a problem whereby if I save a .Rout transcript, when I try to open it next time, I cannot edit it. It opens the buffer in readonly mode. What could be the cause of opening in readonly mode? I wnat to continue working on some transcript in a new session. I am using emacs 29 and ESS version 18.10.3snapshot on Archlinux.
