Hm, does that mean someone who disables it uses it knowingly? ;-)

I have not disabled it but I do use it knowingly, since I have
customized two of its user options: `smiley-style' and
`smiley-emoji-regexp-alist'.  (In the latter I changed the emoji for
"\\(:-(\\)\\W" from "😠" (ANGRY FACE) to "🙁️" (SLIGHTLY FROWNING FACE)
because I think the default value doesn't reflect the typical usage of
the ASCII emoticon ":-(".)
