It comes down to your preference. For me it's a combination 1 and 2. To
keep the main config file to a reasonable size, I've split off some
longish things to separate files. And as I have many Emacs environments,
I've made some effort to share. So each system has as .emacs which loads
my main configs from my shared dotemacs.el.
