I shouldn't have left out this part: it's big.  There are 100,000 artifacts in the central repo.  (Ten times that if you count individual versions.)

Most maven users don't publish their projects in the central repo.  So:

T := total maven users
X := projects per contributor
R := projects in repo
U:= user to contributor ratio

T = U * R / X

Sorry, I don't have hard numbers.
