Emacs 22 and JDE syntax highlighting

I have seen some discussion in the past regarding syntax highlighting
differences between Emacs 21 and 22.  I'm going from 21.3 to 22.1.1.

I wasn't happy with the highlighting in 21 so I made a change in JDE
2.3.5 that provides highlighting for (for example) differences levels
of access protection (attached).  I would appreciate any input any one
would have regarding the changes in 21.  When I first looked at this
problem, there were problems with compiled highlighting regular
expressions so I decided to hold off.
