I am NOT a debian user, so I really don't know what the problem is. The following suggestions are just general troubleshooting tips: 1. I'd get a real root shell with "su -" instead of using sudo. sudo does not give you root's environment. This probably is not your problem in this case, but it's a good idea in general. 2. Rather than using the jde from apt, try downloading the tarball and building it yourself. Does that give different results?
