Sidetracked

Have not yet started with the intended changes because preview-latex
has stopped working with UTF-8 files (involved TeX engine outputs pure
ASCII, so things like ^^c3^^bc).  It turns out that
preview-error-quote where it is called fails to convert those
sequences to clean unicode, and it seemingly is a problem related with
decode-coding-string.  Unfortunately, I can't see to get it reliably
to fail when worked by hand, but it fails pretty consistently when
called within preview-latex's parsing sentinel.

I am sending out a bug report for Emacs now.
